Logging on to instant messaging
Note The features described in this topic are available only if your company has an IBM Lotus instant messaging (Sametime) server, and only for Windows versions of IBM Lotus Notes.

When you log on to Notes, you are also logging on to the IBM Lotus instant messaging (Sametime) server (assuming the instant messaging server was configured for single sign-on, which is the ability for users to log on to more than one application with only one password). In Notes, a green square and the words "I am active" in the status bar indicate that you are logged on to instant messaging.

If instead a "Log on to instant messaging" dialog box appears, either your environment does not use single-sign on or the instant messaging server cannot authenticate you for some reason. Follow these steps to log on to the instant messaging server:

1. (Optional) If you want to specify a user name other than your Notes name, replace your Notes name with the new name.

2. Enter your instant messaging password.

3. (Optional) Select "Save your password" to save your instant messaging password in the current Location document. If you are using single-sign on, saving your password now will log you on to instant messaging with only your Notes password whenever you start Notes.

4. Click "Log on."

If you are ever disconnected from the instant messaging server, Notes automatically restores your connection in most cases. You can also manually restore the connection by choosing File - Instant Messaging - Log On Instant Messaging.

To turn off single-sign on for your Notes client or to remove your instant messaging password from the current Location document, choose File - Preferences - User Preferences and click the Instant Messaging - General tab.
