There are several technologies (or protocols) that allow Notes and the instant messaging server to communicate. During Notes setup, you configure your instant messaging settings, which apply to all locations. In most cases you can accept the defaults. You can always add or change these settings for a location, even if you deselected "Setup instant messaging" during setup.

Instant messaging settings

Your instant messaging settings determine:

• The server that instant messaging uses
• The protocol instant messaging uses to communicate with the instant messaging server
• The ports used for instant messaging
• If Notes sends a "keep-alive" signal to monitor your connection to the server

• The Domino hierarchical name or the host name of your instant messaging server. The Domino hierarchical name shows the position of the server in the company's organization (for example, IMserver/YourCity/YourCompany). The host name is similar to a Web address (for example, imserver.yourcompany.com).
• The instant messaging server port number.
• Whether the instant messaging server is outside a firewall. If the server is outside a firewall, ask your administrator to make sure that you can connect to services on port 1533 and that port 1533 is open for outgoing TCP/IP.
• Whether your company uses a proxy server to connect to the Internet. If your company uses a proxy server, obtain the following information:
  • The proxy type (the protocol that the proxy server uses): SOCKS4, SOCKS5, HTTPS, or HTTP
  • The host name and port number for the proxy server
  • If you are using SOCKS5, HTTPS, or HTTP proxy servers, you need to obtain a user name and password. You should also find out if your proxy server can resolve server names locally.
